Cummins New QSK60 Tier 2 Engine
Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) has upgraded the QSK60 marine engine for propulsion and auxiliary applications to meet U.S. EPA Tier 2 and European Union Stage IIIA emissions regulations.
With propulsion ratings from 1492 - 1864 kW (2100 - 2500 bhp) and auxiliary ratings from 1563 - 1900 kW (2095 - 2547 bhp), the QSK60 Tier 2 is ideally suited for high-hour demanding applications such as offshore support, towing, cargo and passenger transport, as well as ship’s service power.
Early in the product design phase, Cummins consulted with the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) to ensure the engine meets agency requirements and is fully SOLAS compliant. The QSK60 will be built and marinized at Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. in Daventry, UK.
The 60 liter, V-16 engine utilizes the Cummins Modular Common Rail fuel system (MCRS), a design that allows for multiple injection events to precisely control the combustion process. The MCRS provides constant high injection pressure regardless of engine speed or load conditions, which improves idle stability while reducing engine noise and vibration for quiet operation. Cummins has utilized an advanced in-cylinder solution to meet Tier 2 and Stage IIIA emissions standards without increasing displacement or making significant configuration changes, thus reducing the impact to installation.
Quantum System electronics are driven by an electronic control module (ECM), proven in rugged applications across Cummins platforms. C Command instrument panels, part of the Cummins Electronic Information System (EIS) product line, include a selection of monitoring and display options that help operators protect and enhance engine operations and manage operating costs by logging critical operating parameters such as engine load, duty cycle, speed and fuel consumption, while providing diagnostic and prognostic capabilities. A common point of connection in the customer interface box simplifies the link between engine electronics and vessel systems.
The QSK60 Tier 2 product features premium base engine hardware to enhance reliability and durability as well as increase engine life. A single piece cast iron piston, premium cylinder liners and piston rings significantly improve the life of the power cylinder. The design of the MCRS fuel system eliminates the injector load on the camshaft and overhead rocker levers, thus reducing wear on these major components. Minimal changes to the footprint, mounts, ratings and optional equipment from the current engine ensure less complexity for new installations and repowers. Further, the lubrication, cooling, air handling and exhaust systems on the new Tier 2 product are the same design as the original QSK60 marine engine. Additionally, Cummins offers the Eliminator to help reduce maintenance and downtime. Replacing traditional disposable spin-on lube oil filters, this system offers a cost effective vessel maintenance solution and reduces the potential for lube oil contamination during oil-related service events.
The QSK60 Tier 2 engine is covered by a one year warranty, valid at authorized Cummins service outlets worldwide. In addition, both are backed by Cummins Mobile QuickServe program.
