Costa Concordia floats again; Dutch Crane barge Conquest MB1 stays around for assistance.
The disaster cruise ship Costa Concordia floats again, and Dutch company Conquest Offshore reported that the work of its Conquest MB1 crane ship and her crew is almost done. In cooperation with a large group of international companies, Conquest Offshore has in the recent months helped to install the sponsons used to refloat the Costa Concordia.
The salvage of the Costa Concordia had a number of alternatives. The preferred option now implemented – to refloat the ship and tow it to the harbor of Genoa - asked for a special crane vessel. Conquest’s unique crane vessel is characterized by the 1,400-ton full revolving crane, the large 36x136-meter and strong (min. 20 ton/m2) deck area and the very small 3.5-meter working depth. These features make the Conquest MB 1 suitable for the special assignment in Italy.
The multipurpose crane ship Conquest MB1 is designed for marine and offshore heavy-lift operations, and by coincidence was built just in time operational to assist in the mega job along the Tuscan island of Giglio.
The first phase is almost over as the ship is floating and awaiting tow to Genoa. Conquest MB1 will be nearby and ready to assist during the trip to Genoa from Giglio.
