Klein Sonars Used On Columbia Search

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

March 28, 2003

The U.S. Navy Supervisor of Salvage and Phoenix International are employing three Klein System 3000s in the search for debris from the space shuttle Columbia. Four lakes in Texas, which were in the trajectory path of the shuttle, are being mapped with these high-resolution sonars, with the hope of finding debris that may have fallen into them from the shuttle. Conditions are difficult for sonar operations due to the many trees that are on the bottom of the lakes, resulting in frequent grounding of the towfish and damage. Klein has been providing support in the way of emergency parts, repairs, and advice on maximizing the use of their systems for this difficult assignment.
