Hamburg Süd Christnes Santa Clara in Durban

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

March 1, 2011

On Monday, 28 February 2011, Hamburg Süd christened the Santa Clara in Durban, South Africa. She was delivered at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) in Korea in October last year as the first of ten identical container vessels, each with a slot capacity of 7,100 TEU. This makes her not only one of the largest ships ever built for Hamburg Süd, but also, thanks to her 1,600 reefer plugs, one of the ships with the greatest reefer capacity currently available worldwide.

Sponsor of the Santa Clara was Margot Blume-Gast, wife of Dr Ottmar Gast, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd. The Santa Clara is named after a Hamburg Süd cargo steamer deployed between Europe and South America in the 1920s.

Since her delivery the Santa Clara has been operating in the Hamburg Süd service between Asia and South Africa/South America East Coast (New Good Hope Express). By the end of 2012 the shipping group is to put another eight Santa vessels into service.
