Certifying Spaceship Earth

July 21, 2017

Former DNV GL President and CEO, Henrik O. Madsen has presented UN Secretary-General António Guterres with a testimonial attesting to DNV GL's assessment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the UN Headquarters in New York this week.

The presentation took place during a Board meeting of UN Global Compact, the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative, with over 9000 member companies.

Madsen, who is a member of the Board says that, "This was a very good opportunity to draw the Secretary-General's attention formally to the excellent work that DNV GL has done through its Spaceship Earth report."

The Future of Spaceship Earth report is DNV GL's long term forecast of the state of our planet in 2050. Last September, DNV GL used the forecast to assess the likelihood of humanity achieving the 17 SDGs by 2030. The report identified and prioritized areas for action, and also showcased the work of 17 companies that are demonstrating effectively what the private sector can do to advance progress on the Global Goals.

The testimonial was jointly signed by President and CEO of DNV GL, Remi Eriksen and by Madsen (in his capacity as a UN Global Compact board member).

"The SDGs have become a blueprint for business," says Eriksen. "If a company says it is committed to sustainability, that needs no longer to be a vague undertaking; it means showing how you contribute to the outcomes targeted by the SDGs."
