Baltic Index Extends Losing Streak to Ninth Session
Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships ferrying dry bulk commodities, fell for the ninth straight session on Tuesday, on sluggish demand for capesize and panamax vessels.
* The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax vessels shed 44 points, or 2.8 percent, to touch its lowest since July 3 at 1,513 points.
* The capesize index dropped 137 points, or 5.1 percent to 2,535 points, its lowest since July 3.
* Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 170,000-180,000 tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, decreased $949 to $19,344.
* The panamax index lost 23 points, or about 1.5 percent, to 1,517 points.
* Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, fell $189 to $12,148.
* The supramax index rose 2 point to 1,135 points.
