The Federal Ministry for Shipping and Hydrography (BSH ) has appointed
Germanischer Lloyd as the first company authorised to act in a sovereign capacity as recognised Maritime Security Organisation for ships sailing under the German flag.
Dr. Hans G. Payer, Germanischer Lloyd's Executive Board member responsible for
maritime security, said. "This new delegation of sovereign tasks incorporates the
approval of 'Ship Security Plans' (SSPs ) as well as the control of their on-board
implementation on ships flying the German flag. The issue of appropriate security
certificates will be undertaken by BSH."
With this authorization, the number of states that have delegated authority to GL has risen to
17. GL is now recognised as RSO by Germany, Liberia, Malta, Norway, the Marshall Islands,
Denmark, Barbados, Hong Kong, Belize, Georgia, Guinea, Quatar, Samoa, the Fiji Islands and
the Comoro Islands, Tuvalu as well as Vanuata.
