Aleris Introduces Alloy Temper for Marine Applications

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

November 4, 2013

Aleris announced it now offers 5083–H128, the newly developed aluminum alloy temper for marine applications that meets the new standards for marine plate as specified in ASTM's B928-13 standard. ASTM is an internationally recognized standards organization that develops and publishes specifications for a wide range of materials, products, systems and services. Marine plate is used in applications such as ship and vessel construction.

While exposure to elevated temperatures can increase the susceptibility of these types of alloys to corrosion, Aleris' new process for developing marine plate temper demonstrates enhanced corrosion resistance in such conditions.  This includes passing the intergranular corrosion test requirements of ASTM's G67 standard, and the exfoliation resistance requirements of ASTM's G66 standard after being exposed to a temperature of 100 degrees C for seven days.

"This new innovation meets the requirements of our marine and shipyard customers who need an aluminum plate solution that can meet this standard of corrosion resistance in the most extreme conditions," said Brian Hesse, sales director – Commercial and Defense Plate for the Americas. "We are also looking at applying the H128 temper to other plate products."
