Alewijnse Noord Gets Order For Three PSVs

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

May 24, 2011

Alewijnse Noord BV, a subsidiary of Alewijnse Marine Systems based in Drachten, the Netherlands, has recently secured the largest order in its history. The contract is for the installation of the electrical systems on board three new Pilot Station Vessels (PSVs) for the Dutch Pilotage Services. The vessels will be constructed by Barkmeijer Shipyards at Stroobos in the Netherlands.

The PSVs are designed to provide offshore accommodation for the crew of the pilot boats. The vessels will be more than 80 metres in length and will have accommodation for up to 18 pilots and 17 crew. Construction will take place over the next four years and work began in February on the first, to be named the Polaris.

Largest order ever
The contract to design, engineer and install the systems on board the three PSVs is valued at €10 million, making this the largest in the history of Alewijnse Noord. The company will, using its own facilities at Drachten, undertake all of the engineering; supply the entire electrical system, automation, power distribution, switchbox cabinets and consoles; and also be fully responsible for installation and commissioning on-site at Stroobos.

Employment in the Northern Netherlands
The order from Barkmeijer will guarantee work for 20 employees at Alewijnse Noord for a period of three years. The construction of these three large vessels in the (Northern) Netherlands is a significant event, as ships of this size have in recent history been generally outsourced to shipyards in lowerwage countries. However close collaboration between Barkmeijer, Alewijnse Noord and the other parties involved will ensure efficient construction of the ships in the Netherlands. This order will thus contribute to long-term employment in the Northern Netherlands.
