Delta Launch Services has ordered a new pilot boat from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation. This is the sixth St. John’s Class launch built by the Somerset, Mass. shipyard. After 40 Years of Service, Ferry Completes Major Refit
With thousands of miles under her keel ferrying passengers from Woods Hole, Mass., to the private island of Naushon, part of the Elizabethan Island chain south of Woods Hole, the Comorant just underwent a four-month refit at Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, which built the vessel in 1979. Pret Gladding, a co-founder of the Somerset, Mass.-based shipyard, designed the 56 ft., 49 passenger ferry for the Naushon Island Trust.

RI Operator Receives Second GH Ferry
Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has delivered a second high-speed passenger ferry for Rhode Island Fast Ferry, Inc., for service between Quonset Point, Rhode Island and Martha’s Vineyard, alongside Ava Pearl, the operator’s first high-speed catamaran built by the Somerset, Mass., shipyard in 2012.The new 320-passenger, all-aluminum catamaran, Julia Leigh, measures 113.5 feet (34.4m) overall, 32.4 feet (9.9m) at the beam, and draws six feet (1.9m).

The Duclos family is iconic in boatbuilding circles, as the Somerset, Mass.-based Gladding-Hearn, Duclos Corporation, has built a strong heritage in the pilot boat and fast ferry sectors, and in total more than 425 vessels have been delivered since it was founded in 1955. Today a trio of second-generation siblings run the yard, brothers and co-presidents John and Peter Duclos with sister Carol Hegarty serving as CFO.
Another Ferry Delivered to MBTA in Boston
Glory, the second Incat Crowther designed 27m catamaran ferry built by Gladding Hearn for MBTA of Boston has been delivered following on from sister ship Champion.When Champion was launched late last year, she was the 500th Incat Crowther designed vessel to enter service; Glory takes that number to 529. At the heart of that growth is a range of multi-vessel mass transit projects, such as a quartet of vessels for San Francisco’s WETA and 18 vessels for NYC Ferry in New York.
