Wind allows Italy to win against Britain in America’s Cup Challenger Race
The America's Cup Challenger Series remained level on Saturday due to a dying Mediterranean breeze. Britain ran out of time in order to convert a seemingly winning position against Italy in their third match-up.
The race was abandoned because the officials felt it exceeded the time limit. This left the teams with a point each in the Louis Vuitton Final in Barcelona, where the team that wins the most points out of seven will win.
The winner of the series will be able to take on New Zealand in the America's Cup next month.
The race schedule will resume on Sunday.
Italy fought back to a close race after Britain took the lead early. Ben Ainslie and his crew managed to establish their dominance and get ahead of Italy again.
As the wind decreased, both Britain and Italy's AC75 monohulls that were foiling came off their hydrofoils. Both boats were now in a painfully slow displacement mode where the boat's hull was in the water instead of 'flying above' it.
The minutes and seconds ticked by as the boats waded around the course until the race ended. (Reporting and editing by Toby Davis; Alexander Smith)
