What's going on on the second day of the Paris Olympics?

Posted to Maritime Reporter on July 27, 2024

After a wet, rainy start to the Paris Olympics, the sun will finally shine brightly. The City of Light can celebrate by grabbing 13 gold medals.

Archers, mountain bikes, slalom kayakers and skateboarders will all be among the new Olympic champions.

SWIMMING - PEATY TAKES A PLUNGE

Adam Peaty, the British world record-holder in 100m breaststroke for men, will be aiming to win a third gold medal in a row. Meanwhile, the French 400m medley men's final is set to begin on Sunday with Leon Marchand as the hot favourite.

At La Defense Arena, Gretchen Walsh, American world record holder and silver medalist in Tokyo, will compete against Zhang Yufei of China for the gold in the 100-meter butterfly women's event.

First Look at Brilliant Biles

Simone Biles is the most decorated gymnast of all time. She returns to the Olympics for her third Olympics, after experiencing the "twisties", a term gymnasts used to describe a temporary loss in spatial awareness while performing high-difficulty components.

Biles will compete in the women's qualifying rounds at Bercy Arena. This is the venue where artistic gymnastics is held.

The Mountain Bike Favorite is France's FERRAND Prevot

Pauline Ferrand Prevot, a Frenchwoman, will be the favourite in the women's race on Elancourt Hill to try and make up for her disappointment at Tokyo where she did not win any medals.

The hilly 4.4km west of Paris circuit will be the venue for multiple laps.

CHINESE BULLSEYE ON THE SHOOTING RANG

China kicked off their campaign with the first gold medal of the Games. They will go for more on day two.

In the 10-metre air-pistol competition for men, reigning world champion Zhang Bowen will be aiming to win his first Olympic gold medal. Meanwhile, Jiang Ranxin's compatriot will try to improve upon her Olympic bronze from Tokyo.

FRANCE JUDOKA MEDAL EYES ON THE MAT

Amandine Buchard of France, who won a silver medal in Tokyo for women under 52kg, will be a medal contender in her home country. However, she'll have to contend with four-time world champion Uta Abe from Japan.

Hifumi Abe, Abe's younger brother, is a four-time world champion at the men's weight category under 66kg. He hopes to retain his Olympic title.

The Abes will attempt to replicate their feat at Paris. They were the first siblings in history to win individual gold medals the same day, and they did so at the Tokyo Games.

Big Names in Women's Badminton Take to the Court

Tai Tzu Ying, the silver medalist in Tokyo's women's singles competition, is a hot favorite to beat Lianne Tan of Belgium during group play at La Chapelle Area. Both women are 30 years old and competing in their fourth Olympics.

Fathimath Abd Razzaq, a Maldivian who is a three-time Olympian and has won the bronze medal at Tokyo, will be facing off with PV Sindhu, the Indian athlete who took home the bronze.

There are other women competing, such as South Korea's An Se Young, and the gold medalist from Tokyo, Chen Yufei, of China. Also, Spain's Carolina Marin is in action. She won gold in Rio, but was injured in Tokyo.

FRANCE V CANADA - BLOCKBUSTER WOMEN’S SOCCER CLASH

In the second matchday of the women's tournament, France will face Canada in group A. The hosts can win a place in the knockout stage.

As a result of the drone spying scandal, Canada's gold medalists in Tokyo will be dealing with a six-point deducted from FIFA and a suspension for Bev Priestman.

This deduction has a major impact on Canada's ability to progress from the group.

The United States, four-time Olympic gold medalists, and the 2016 Olympic champion Germany can both secure quarter-final spots.

First Canoe Gold is Up for Grabs

On Sunday afternoon, the semi-finals of women's single kayak will take place and then the final. This is when we'll see the first gold medal awarded in canoeing.

The rowing competition's second day begins in the morning with repechage for single and doubles sculls, followed by heats in pairs, lightweights sculls, and men's or women's fours.

ARCHIVES GET DOWN TO BUSINESS

The Esplanade des Invalides hosts the gold and bronze medal matches in women's archery team.

South Korea has won nine gold medals in the past decade and is chasing a 10th.

HORSES GO CROSS COUNTRY CANTER

The cross-country event is celebrated in Versailles.

The equine stars and their riders of the Games will compete in a 5km course with artificial and natural obstacles on the former hunting grounds of French kings.

The rain that has fallen over the last two days prevented the organizers from postponing this event. However, Sunday's weather will favour horses who are accustomed to wetter and softer ground.

The favourites are Britain, Germany and France. (Reporting and editing by Ken Ferris in Paris, Simon Jennings)
