U.S. Central Command said that Yemen's Houthi militia group has been launching missiles against international ocean shipping for the past 24 hours, and two commercial ships have been damaged in those attacks.

CENTCOM reported that the Iran-backed Houthis fired a ballistic missile against a container ship, Tavvishi. It was a Liberian flagged vessel owned by Swiss nationals. According to CENTCOM, the vessel was damaged but there were no injuries amongst its crew.

CENTCOM reported that two missiles were fired by the Houthis and hit the Norderney - a German cargo ship flying the Antigua and Barbados Flags. CENTCOM reported that the ship was damaged, but there were no injuries to its crew. The vessel continued its journey.

Houthis claimed that they had previously attacked Tavvishi, Norderney and set them alight.

According to LSEG, MSC Ship Management is in charge of the Tavvishi. Reuters was unable to reach the company for a comment immediately. Sunship Schiffahrtskontor (LSEG) reports that the manager of Norderney is Sunship Schiffahrtskontor.

Since November, the Houthis have been attacking merchant ships in solidarity with Palestinians living in Gaza. In a new attack, the militants have destroyed one ship and seized another vessel. They also killed three crew in yet another attack.

The campaign caused global disruption by forcing ships to reroute their trade around Africa and avoid the Suez Canal. This action has also stoked concerns that the Israel-Hamas conflict could spread to the Middle East and destabilize it.

In response to the attacks, the United States and Britain carried out strikes on Houthi targets.

CENTCOM said on Sunday that its forces had also destroyed a unmanned aerial system in the Gulf of Aden, as well as 2 land attack cruise missiles & 1 missile launcher within Houthi-controlled Yemen.
