Ukraine holds follow-up meeting on peace summit to address food security
Ukraine announced that 75 countries and organizations have agreed on a "shared view" of the measures needed to guarantee an uninterrupted supply of Ukrainian agricultural goods and contribute to global food security. This is a major concern after Russia's invasion in 2022.
The Swiss Peace Summit hosted by Switzerland was followed up with an online meeting between representatives from countries and organizations. This online meeting also included a commitment to make additional efforts in implementing international law.
The U.N. stated that millions of people in the world are at risk of starvation due to the impact of food prices.
Since Russia pulled out of a U.N. mediated deal last year that guaranteed safe shipments for Ukrainian grain, Ukraine's ports have been repeatedly attacked.
The recovery of shipments has been helped by the restoration of logistics in southern Odesa.
Ukraine exported 69.86 millions metric tons (69.86 million metric tonnes) of grain, oilseeds and vegetable oils for the whole 2023/24 season.
Compare this to Ukraine's monthly grain exports via the Black Sea of up 6 million tons before Russia's invasion.
In a press release, the president's office stated that the steps discussed on Wednesday included security of navigation for commercial traffic in the Black Sea basin and the Azov basins as well as protection of trade routes.
The project also included the protection and restoration of Ukrainian port infrastructure, as well as the increase in production capacity for the agriculture sector.
Jon Finer (Deputy U.S. National Security Advisor), who attended the meeting personally during his Kyiv trip, stated that Ukraine's resilience, and the support it received from its partner countries, had allowed it to defend exports and push the Russian Black Sea Fleet back.
The working group session on Wednesday was part of a series that began after the summit in June, and included an August discussion on energy safety. The presidential office announced that a third meeting would be held to discuss the release and deportation of prisoners. (Reporting and editing by Anastasiia Mlenko)
