Trump safe after gunfire erupts at rally, source says shooter dead

Posted to Maritime Reporter on July 13, 2024

Gunfire broke out at a Donald Trump rally in New York on Saturday. The event caused panic among the crowd, and the Republican presidential nominee was spattered with blood. He then emerged, pumped his fist into the air, and appeared to say "Fight!" Fight! Fight!"

A source said that the shooter had been killed and that the Secret Service was investigating this shooting as an attempted assassination.

Trump dropped to his knees and hid behind the podium as Secret Service agents covered him. About a minute after he emerged, his "Make America Great Again' hat was knocked down and he could be heard saying, "wait, Wait," before Secret Service agents led him to a waiting vehicle.

After the shooting at Butler, Pennsylvania (about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh), the Secret Service and former President's campaign claimed that Trump was in safety.

The live video shows blood on Trump's cheek and ear.

A Washington Post reporter, citing Butler County District Attorney, posted on social media that an audience member had also died and another was in critical health.

It was unclear who the shooter was and what his motives were. Both Republicans and Democrats condemned the violence.

The shooting took place less than four month before the November 5th election when Trump will face a rematch against Democratic President Joe Biden.

"President Trump thanked law enforcement officers and first responders who acted quickly to stop this horrendous crime. He is doing fine and being examined at a local hospital. In a press release, Steven Cheung, spokesperson for the company said that more details would be forthcoming.

Trump was just about to begin his speech when the gunshots started. Trump and other rally participants fell on their faces. Secret Service agents surrounded him, and Trump hid behind the podium for a minute before being rushed into the waiting vehicle.

Trump and Biden have a tight rematch in the election, according to most opinion polls. This includes those conducted by /Ipsos.

Biden stated in a press release: "This kind of violence has no place in America." We must condemn it as a nation.

Ron Moose described the chaos as follows: "I heard four shots, I saw the crowd fall, and Trump also ducked very quickly. The Secret Service jumped in and tried to protect him as quickly as possible. Within a split second, they all protected him.

Moose claimed to have seen a man run and be chased by military officers. He claimed to have heard more shots but did not know who fired them. He said that snipers were already on the roof behind the stage of the warehouse.

BBC spoke to a man who claimed to be an eyewitness and said he had seen a man crawling up the roof of a building near the event with a rifle. The BBC did not identify the person who said that he and his companions pointed at the man to try to alert security.

"I'm wondering why Trump is still talking. The man wearing a red Trump cap asked, "Why haven't they pulled him off the stage?" Next thing you know, there were five shots.

REPUBLICANS and DEMOCRATS DECRY Violation

Trump will receive the formal nomination of his party at the Republican National Convention which begins in Milwaukee on Monday.

On social media, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that "this horrific act of violence against a peaceful political rally has no right to exist in our country. It should be condemned unanimously and strongly."

Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate majority leader, said that he was horrified at what had happened and relieved Trump was in safety. "Political violence is not welcome in this country," he said.

Secret Service spokesperson posted on social media that the former President is safe. The Secret Service is currently conducting an investigation, and more information will be provided as soon as it becomes available.

CNN reported that Trump had been injured but did not provide any further details. It wasn't clear what kind of injuries Trump may have suffered.

Yellow police tape was placed around the stage and chairs were thrown over. The video feed showed a helicopter flying above the scene and officers walking through the area. On a roof, near where Trump stood, armed law enforcement officers could also be seen.

A campaign official announced on Saturday that Biden's campaign is working to stop its TV ads and all other outbound communications.

Trump, who was president from 2017-2021 won the Republican presidential nomination easily early in the campaign. He has also largely united the Republican party, which had briefly wavered after his supporters attempted to reverse his election loss in 2020 by attacking the U.S. Capitol in January 2021.

Four separate criminal prosecutions were awaiting the businessman, a former reality TV star. He was convicted in late May for trying to conceal hush-money payments made to a pornstar. However, the three other prosecutions that he faced -- including two related to his efforts to overturn his loss -- were halted by a Supreme Court ruling earlier this month which found him partially immune from prosecution. Nathan Layne and Brendan McDermid in Butler, Pennsylvania, and Jeff Mason in Washington Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, reported.
