The British medal machine is put to the test by new events in France

Posted to Maritime Reporter on July 26, 2024

Mark Robinson, the leader of Britain's sailing squad, said that new events will be introduced in 2024 and present a new challenge to defend their Olympic crown.

The British team has won more medals than any other nation since 1900, when sailing made its debut at the Olympic Games. This includes a record number of 30 golds as well as 63 total sailing medals -- 21 silvers and 12 bronzes.

Robinson said in Marseille, on the eve before the 2024 Olympics: "Our government's target is three to five medals. The success of the British team on the water ensured funding of tens and millions of pounds for the 2024 Games.

UK Sport states on their website that sailing will receive 22.8 million pounds (29.3 millions dollars) in 2021-2025, exclusive of any awards made directly to athletes for their living and sporting expenses.

He said that the challenge for the British sailing team in the past was to be the top nation. This means winning gold medals.

Robinson stated that France was "quite dominant". He added that new board classes, such as Formula Kite or iQFOiL Windsurfing, which are disciplines where France has a long tradition, helped because they recruited from the existing professional circuits.

He said that for the British it would be a matter of "starting at the beginning and converting to other classes", adding that the French could also benefit from home advantage.

The United States ranked second in the overall Olympic sailing Medal Standings.

Robinson stated that the team had the capability to reach the government's target. Some would even say they could do more, given the strength of the other teams. They also lost the 470 women and Finn men dinghy races, which the team had previously dominated.

Robinson, the top nation in the world, said that the Games' build-up was crucial to the success of the Games.

"We're going strong." Other countries could also win gold, but not us. The Dutch could win two skiffs."

"Can we win five medals? "Yes," replied Robinson, who led the British sailing squad for seven years. He has also managed four national teams in his 25-year career.

"Can we win more?" "Maybe if we get lucky (and) if the weather is in our favor," he said.
