Thailand protests Myanmar Navy firing on Thai fishing boats

Posted to Maritime Reporter on December 1, 2024

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced on Sunday that Thailand had protested the incident in which Myanmar's navy fired on Thai fishing boats, after a fisherman died, two were hurt, and dozens of people were arrested from one boat.

Shinawatra has questioned the claim that Myanmar's navy fired on the vessels when they were allegedly intruding into Myanmar territorial waters on Saturday.

Two of fifteen Thai fishing boats were shot at when they were within Myanmar's territorial water, between a distance of 4-5.7 nautical miles (7.4-10.6km) and near the southern Thai province Ranong.

Shinawatra replied, "It's inconclusive," when reporters asked if Thai fishing boats had encroached into Myanmar's territorial water.

She said that Thailand wanted more information on the incident, and the release of the four Thais detained among the 31 other fishermen.

The ruling junta of Myanmar did not respond immediately to a request for comment made by telephone.

Phumtham Wechayachai, Thai Defense Minister, said that a protest letter was sent through the local border system to Myanmar. The letter demanded clear details of what happened as well as a rapid return of the Thai boat with its crew.

Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa sent a letter to the Myanmar government expressing concern about the incident and called the Myanmar ambassador on Monday for a discussion, asking for clarifications and the immediate release of four Thai citizens.

Myanmar is in crisis since the military took power in 2021, overthrowing an elected government. They also sparked an armed revolt by putting down protests using lethal force.
