Ten migrants die in Mediterranean shipwreck, German charity says
A German charity reported on Monday that ten migrants drowned in the Mediterranean when their boat was swamped with water. However, 51 others were saved from the vessel.
RESQSHIP which operates a migrant ship named Nadir said on the social media platform X that it found the 61 passengers on board a wooden boat with 10 of them trapped on the lower deck.
The charity stated that two of the survivors were unconscious and receiving medical treatment, adding they needed urgent evacuation.
RESQSHIP did not provide any details on the location or time of the rescue operation, but the marinetraffic.com tracker indicates that the Nadir WAS near the port of Sfax in eastern Tunisia, Monday.
Since 2014, the United Nations has recorded more than 20,000 deaths or disappearances along the central Mediterranean. This makes it the most dangerous migration crossing in the entire world.
In the first week of this month, 11 bodies were found in the sea near the coasts of Libya. (Reporting and editing by Crispian B. Balmer, Andrew Heavens and Gavin Jones)
