Tariffs loom as US container imports reach near record levels in February

Posted to Maritime Reporter on March 10, 2025

The U.S. imports of containers increased by 4.7% in February compared to the same month last year, but may drop in the coming months, as the U.S.'s trade war with China, and other trading partners, takes hold. Descartes, a supply chain technology company, said this on Monday.

Descartes reported that U.S. ports handled over 2.2 million 20 foot equivalent units (TEUs), which is the second highest volume in February on record. This was largely due to a 7.9% increase in volume from China.

The robust import volume of last year has continued into 2025. This is due to the resilient consumer spending, and the early loading of parts of machinery and other goods in anticipation of tariffs expected on China, Mexico, and Canada. Tariffs on China will have a major impact on ocean shipping, as most of these goods arrive in the U.S. via ships. The majority of goods from Mexico and Canada enter the U.S. via truck or train.

Jackson Wood, Descartes director of industry strategy, said that "global trade conditions have become more challenging due to new and possible U.S. Tariff changes in the face of escalating tensions between multiple countries."

Last month, U.S. president Donald Trump imposed tariffs of 10% on Chinese products. This month they have been doubled to 20%. These levies come on top of the 25% tariffs that were imposed during Trump's initial term.

The data from China shows that exports to China unexpectedly dropped in the period between January and February, due to the fact that U.S. frontloading decreased and Chinese factories were closed for Lunar New Year.

China has responded with an additional 10%-15% tariff on certain U.S. imported products, effective March 10. China has also complained to the World Trade Organization about U.S. tariffs.

Trump also plans to continue his global trade war.

In an address last week to Congress, Trump announced that further tariffs will be implemented on April 2. These include "reciprocal duties" and non-tariff measures aimed at balancing years of trade imbalances. (Reporting and editing by Andrea Ricci in Los Angeles, Lisa Baertlein from Los Angeles)
