Singapore's resort island closed to the public due to oil spill

The beaches on Sentosa Island, south of Singapore, were closed Saturday due to an oil spill that spread from the nearby shipping terminal.

According to Reuters, a witness observed that tape was used to separate visitors from the oil-stained waters and sand at Tanjong Beach.

"Oil slick spotted. Cleaning is in progress. A sign on the beach read: "Please stay away from water."

The website of Sentosa has posted an advisory that the waters at Tanjong, Palawan, and Siloso Beach will be closed to swimming and other sea activities for cleaning.

Oil spilled from Pasir Panjang Terminal on Friday after a dredger flying the Dutch flag struck a bunker vessel flying the Singapore flag.

In a Friday evening statement, Singapore's Port Authority said that some oil had leaked from a damaged cargo tank aboard the bunker vessel. "The affected cargo tank was isolated and spill contained."

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore announced on Friday that the oil spill cleanup operation was currently underway.
