Shipping source: Iran releases cargo from oil tanker St Nikolas

Posted to Maritime Reporter on July 25, 2024

A shipping source said on Thursday that Iran had released the oil cargo of the Greek owned, Marshall Islands flagged tanker, which it seized earlier this year in the Gulf of Oman.

Source: Iran still holds the vessel M/T Saint Nikolas. The vessel was loaded with 1,000,000 barrels of Iraqi crude destined for Turkey at the time it was taken.

The source stated that the cargo was released after negotiations earlier this week.

Iran had seized the oil tanker last January as a retaliation to the U.S. confiscation of the same vessel in 2013.

The Foreign and Oil Ministries of Iran were not available for comment. Reporting by Renee Maltezou, Additional reporting by Parisa Hafezi. Editing by Mark Heinrich and David Evans.
