SailGP Impact League: Great Britain wins

Posted to Maritime Reporter on July 13, 2024

The Great Britain SailGP Team of Hannah Mills and Ben Ainslie won the Impact League season four for its sustainable efforts. Denmark, last year's champions, came in second and Switzerland third.

The Impact League, which measures how SailGP teams are reducing their carbon footprints, was evaluated on four new areas - climate action, inclusion acceleration, zero waste race and breaking boundaries.

The Impact League is held in conjunction with the SailGP Season Championship.

SailGP released a statement Friday stating that "The deal was sealed for Great Britain when they secured first place in the League's fourth and final focus area - Breaking Boundaries" - which gave them the chance to increase gender equality on the F50, in accordance with SailGP's Women's Pathway Strategy.

Last season, Great Britain finished third in the Impact League. This season they won with 602 total points.

SailGP says the competition will be judged and overseen by independent judges such as climate leader Rachel Kyte, and Jamie Chadwick, three-time W Series champion.

Mills, a Great Britain strategist, said that the team had worked hard to inspire others to also take climate action.

The 1851 Trust’s climate education programme, Protect Our Future, and Low Carbon have helped us achieve some incredible things this season, from educating over 1,750 children on climate change at SailGP to powering our team base with renewable energy.
