SailGP debuts 2025 Sassnitz in Germany

Posted to Maritime Reporter on September 26, 2024

SailGP, the adrenaline-fuelled sailing spectacle, is headed to new waters in August 2025. The elite sailing championship will make its highly anticipated German debut on the island Ruegen. Sassnitz along the coast of the island will host two days high-octane races.

On August 16-17, some of the best sailors in the world will compete in fleet races right off the coast. This will bring the excitement of SailGP for the first-time to German waters and its fans.

SailGP is a competition where national teams compete in foiling 50-foot catamarans that can reach speeds of over 60 mph.

Sassnitz is the latest of a series of iconic venues around the world, including Dubai, Rio de Janeiro and New York for next season.

SailGP CEO Russell Coutts said, "Bringing SailGP into Germany is a major milestone." We're delighted to give German fans the chance to rally around their team for the first-time on home waters. It's going be an amazing event."

Sebastian Vettel is a four-time Formula 1 World Champion and co-owner the Germany SailGP Team. Few athletes can understand the excitement of competition as well as Vettel. The home race is extra important.

He said, "There is nothing like racing before your own crowd." It will be a great boost for the German team, and an excellent opportunity to inspire new German sailing enthusiasts.

Germany's SailGP Team, led by Olympic double bronze medalist Erik Heil will enter their second season of competition when they arrive in Sassnitz. They are eager to improve on their debut in 2024 and show they belong amongst the SailGP elite.
