Plan: Germany will accelerate offshore wind development in Germany by 2035

A draft plan released by Germany's maritime authority on Friday showed that the country plans to build more turbines in the North Sea and Baltic Seas by 2035 than it originally planned.

The German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency has published a draft containing specification for the expansion of offshore wind energy to up to 50 gigawatts by 2035. This is an increase from the 40 GW initially planned.

Germany plans to build 60 gigawatts by 2037. Germany plans to build 60 GW by 2037.

The draft area development plan showed that offshore wind power will remain an important pillar of the future transformation of the energy sector, said Economy Minister Robert Habeck in a press release.

Berlin's long-term goal is to continue building offshore wind power capacity at 70 GW by 2045.

German Environmental Aid (a non-governmental organisation) criticized the draft as well as the planned reduction in environmental standards for the accelerated areas. They called it a "fatal error".
