PARIS OLYMPICS: What you should know now

Sifan Hassan took the gold medal in the women's race, achieving an Olympic record of 2 hours, 22 mins and 55 secs.

It was her first medal on the final day of the Olympics in 2024, when more than a dozen were up for grabs.

After a successful Games in France that helped revive the Olympic brand, Paris will later pass the baton on to Los Angeles at the closing ceremony.

DISTANCE QUEEN HASAN

Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won the women's race marathon with her famous late-kick. She added the gold medal to the bronze she had already earned in the 10,000 metre and 5000 meter races earlier in the week.

Hassan fought with Tigst assefa from Ethiopia and managed in the final stretch to beat her by three seconds.

FINAL DAY

Even though it's the last day, there are still 14 medals to be won, including the women's basketball, men's wrestling and cycling track.

U.S. DOMINATE RELAYS

The United States has won both the women's and men's 4x400 metre relays at the Olympics, confirming their dominance on the track.

The women's win was by over four seconds. This is the second fastest time in history, and extends the winning streak of the country in this event to eight consecutive victories.

The men were a little more precise, holding Botswana at bay just before the finish.

In Paris, Jamaica's dominance of the women's sprinting has come to an end.

U.S. SPOIL FRENCH DREAMS OF BASKETBALL FAIRYTALE

The United States won the gold medal at the Olympics for the fifth time in a row, claiming a 98 to 87 victory over France.

Stephen Curry, LeBron James and other American showmen smashed the hearts of Gallics.

James, 39-year-old LA Lakers player, said that he couldn't imagine playing in the Los Angeles Games 2028.

TAIWAN's LIN Wins BOXING GOLD

Lin Yu-ting (28), one of the two boxers in the middle of a controversy over gender eligibility, defeated Poland's Julia Szeremeta and won the women's featherweight championship.

Boxing is not certain to be included in the 2020 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee organized the event in Paris after stripping the International Boxing Association from its position as the sport’s global body due to governance and financial issues.

World Boxing, a rival organisation, said that national boxing federations must join their ranks in order to include the sport on the Los Angeles program.

KIPYEGON GOLDEN HATTRICK

Kenyan Faith Kipyegon, who won her third consecutive 1,500 metre gold at the Olympics on Saturday by surging in the final lap and finishing more than one second ahead of everyone else.

She became the first woman to win three consecutive Olympic 1,500m titles.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway bounced back after his shocking defeat in the 1,500 metre race to win the 5,050 metres with a fierce last lap.

U.S. Gymnast Children may lose medal

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ruled that Romanian Ana Barbosu will take the bronze medal from American Jordan Chiles in the women’s artistic gymnastics competition floor exercise. Barbosu will now move up to the third place.

MEDAL TABLE MACHINATIONS

China regained the top spot in the medal table, based on the number of golds, after winning the diving event and the men's weightlifting event.

The United States is only one gold behind and will need to win the women's volleyball and basketball matches in order to regain the top spot.

After winning the gold medal in the final of the men's Volleyball against Poland, France has moved up to the fifth place in the standings.

Before the Games started, President Emmanuel Macron set a goal of a top-five finish.

CHINA'S GOLDEN SWEEEP

Cao Yuan, the winner of the 10-metre platform men's event, completed a sweep for China. This was the first time that a country had won all diving events in one Games.

Noah Williams of Britain finished third to win the bronze. Rikuto Tamay, the Japanese diver, won the silver medal.

The Product Placement Games

The winning athletes in Paris received their medals and Louis Vuitton trays, before receiving a Samsung flip-phone to take a victory selfie. This marks the beginning of a new product placement era at the Olympics that Los Angeles is set to continue.
