PARIS OLYMPICS: what you should know now

On Wednesday, 23 medals will be awarded in the Olympic games, including athletics, swimming, speed-climbing, skating, boxing and artistic swimming.

What you should know about Wednesday's Olympic Games:

Flying Dutchman

Dutchman Harrie lavreysen broke the world record for men's flying 200 metre laps as he led the qualifying timesheets in sprint track cycling.

The career of the left-back Nikola Karabatic is over as he has retired from sport.

The brothers Alexis Lebrun, Simon Gauzy and their teammate Simon Gauzy, who play table tennis together, qualified France to the semi-finals of men's teams.

DUTCH, AUSTRALIAN SEA GOLD

Anne-Marie Rindom of Denmark won the silver medal and was hailed as the greatest Olympic sailing success ever.

Matt Wearn, the Australian Olympic champion, won gold at the Men's Dinghy. Pavlos Kontides, of Cyprus, took his second silver in his fifth Games.

AUSTRALIAN ARRESTED

A police union said that on Wednesday, Australian Olympic hockey star Tom Craig had been arrested and held for purchasing cocaine in Paris.

Australian Olympic Committee earlier announced that a male member of men's team hockey had been arrested, but did not name the player.

CLIMBING WINS

Aleksandra Miroslav, a Polish world record holder in women's climbing speed won her nation's very first gold at the Paris Games. This was the sport's Olympic premiere as an individual event.

800 MTRES

Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi won his heat of 800 meters in just one minute, 44.64 second. This was the best time in the open competition.

HURDS DEFENCE

Jasmine Camacho Quinn of Puerto Rico won the 100m hurdles heats with the fastest time, while all other favourites advanced to the semi-finals.

Cyrena Mayela, a French track athlete who is a bright hope for a gold medal in the individual category of competitions and holds a world record from Nigeria (Tobi Amusan), as well as Masai Russels's American counterpart are trying to stop Cyrena.

Race Walk Relay

Alvaro Martin, a two-time world champion from Spain, and Maria Perez won the mixed race walk marathon relay gold by almost a minute. This event was making its Olympic debut.

NIGHT MARATHON

On Saturday, amateur runners can run the same Olympic Marathon course in Paris as athletes. But they will have the excitement of doing so at night and on a route well lit that takes them past the iconic monuments of the city.

PRODUCT PLACEMENT

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that the Paris Games were a great example of how sponsors can use their products to promote themselves. From Louis Vuitton bags at the opening ceremonies, to selfies on the podium with Samsung smartphones, this trend is expected in the future.

WRESTLING

The Indian Olympic Association announced that Vinesh Phogat, an Indian wrestler who failed to meet the required weight for the 50kg women's freestyle final was disqualified. She will no longer receive any medals.

SMARATHON SWIMMING

After being cancelled Tuesday because of pollution concerns, the familiarisation session was held as planned on Wednesday after water quality tests were met.
