PARIS OLYMPICS: what you should know now

Posted to Maritime Reporter on August 4, 2024

On the middle Sunday, the Paris Olympics, the last day of swimming will be held, as well as the highly anticipated 100 metre men's final. Novak Djokovic is vying to win a medal and fill in that one hole in his trophy case.

The river Seine water quality is now a major concern for the Games after the training of Monday's triathlon relay mixed was cancelled due to heavy rains that made swimming unsafe.

What you should know about Sunday's Olympics

SHERICKA JACKSON PULLS OUT

Shericka Jackson, Jamaica's 200-metre world champion withdrew on Sunday after suffering an injury in Hungary at a pre-season meet.

Jackson said that her injury was a factor in her decision to not compete in the 100m race in Paris.

Gabby Thomas of the United States has sailed into the semi-finals for women in the 200 metres. She is the one to beat after the fastest time from Sunday's morning preliminary round.

BOXING GENDER DÉBATE

Lin Yu-ting defeated Bulgaria's Svetlana Camenova Staneva by unanimous decision on Sunday in the featherweight quarterfinal fight to secure Taiwan's 3rd boxing medal from the Paris Games.

Lin and Algerian Imane Khilif have caused a storm on social media at the Olympics after they were disqualified from the World Championships in 2023 due to not meeting the gender-specific eligibility rules of the International Boxing Association.

Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said that there is no doubt Khelif Lin are women.

SEINE WATER QUALITY IS BACK IN FOCUS

The Paris Olympics has cancelled the Sunday training swim for the mixed triathlon relay after rainy conditions in Seine River affected the water quality.

After rains on July 31 and August 1, tests revealed that the water did not reach a certain threshold, and a decision was taken late Saturday.

On Monday, the mixed relay will be held.

SPRINT FINALS

The men's sprint 100 metres is one of the most prestigious events at the Games. Noah Lyles of the United States will be hoping to achieve a rare Olympic double.

Lyles faces a tough challenge, as he lost in Saturday's heats to Britain's Louie Hinchliffe. Kishane Thomson from Jamaica is also on form.

Final scheduled at 1950 GMT

UKRAINE'S First Gold

Ukraine won their first gold of the Games at the Women's Sabre Team event, beating South Korea by a narrow margin in an exciting final match on Saturday.

Olga Kharlan led her team in a stunning comeback victory after winning bronze as an individual and Ukraine's very first medal at the Paris Olympics.
