Orsted installs Tesla battery for UK Offshore Wind Farm
The Danish company announced on Wednesday that the renewable energy group Orsted would install a Tesla Megapack storage system in connection with Britain's Hornsea 3 off-shore wind farm.
As the production of renewable energies increases, energy storage becomes increasingly important because the wind or sun might not blow during peak hours when consumers turn on their lights and other appliances.
Duncan Clark, Orsted's UK & Ireland Chief Duncan Clark said that the battery would help to ensure renewable energy was used as efficiently as possible by storing the energy when the demand is low and then releasing the energy back into the system at the time it is needed.
Orsted stated that this would reduce the price volatility of energy for consumers, especially during peak times when it is more expensive.
The system is expected to be operational in 2026. It will be located at Swardeston, an onshore converter station, and have a 600 MWh capacity, which is equivalent to the energy consumption of 80,000 UK households.
Orsted has not disclosed the amount invested in the batteries. (Reporting and editing by Terje Solsvik, Stine Jacobsen)
