Organisers of the Olympics are confident that triathlon will take place despite rain on Seine

Paris 2024 organizers are confident that the triathlon event will be held as planned on Tuesday, despite recent rains which could lead to Sunday's session being cancelled because of concerns about the water quality in Seine.

In a press release, organisers stated that "the rain that fell on Paris in the past 24 hours will likely impact the quality of water in the Seine in the next 24 to36 hours."

It is possible to cancel the familiarisation training (athletes) planned for Sunday, 28th July at 8 am. This depends on the current water quality and conditions expected in the next 24 hour.

The decision will be taken at 4 a.m. (1200 GMT) Sunday morning.

We are confident that we can organise events in the manner planned starting 30 July. We expect that the water quality will return to acceptable levels within 24 to 36 days, given the weather forecasts for the next 48-hours.

Water quality has improved significantly, as observed in July.

Data from Friday showed that six out of seven days between July 17 and 23 were suitable for swimming in the Seine.

The city and regional authorities published data showing that the concentrations for enterococci bacteria and E.coli were higher than the legal limits on the 21st of July at the Pont Alexandre III Bridge, where the athletes will be taking to the water.

In Paris, the Seine River has been cleaned up to allow people to swim again in the river as they did during the 1900 Paris Olympics. A sewer issue last summer forced the cancellation of an event that was to take place before the Olympics.

From July 26 through August 11, the Olympic triathlon and marathon swim legs will be held on the Seine.

The decision on whether or not to hold Olympic events is made the night before and early the next morning by a technical committee that includes athletes, international federations and regional authorities, as well as the Meteo France meteorological office.

In the event that the river is deemed unsuitable, the organisers will have contingency plans. The marathon swimming will be held at Vaires-sur-Marne where rowing, canoeing, and triathlon events will be held. (Reporting and editing by Alison Williams, Ken Ferris and Julien Pretot)
