One person killed after a Ukrainian drone strikes a ferry in russian port, according to regional governor

Posted to Maritime Reporter on July 23, 2024

Veniamin Kodratyev, the regional governor of the southern Krasnodar Region in Russia, said that a Ukrainian drone attacked a ferry in Port Kavkaz and killed a person.

The RIA news agency, citing a source from emergency services, reported that a fire caused by the drone strike at the port was extinguished later.

Kyiv has not yet commented on the incident and could not confirm its details.

Port Kavkaz lies on a small spit of land adjacent to the Crimean Peninsula. The ferries based in Port Kavkaz help connect Russia's continental coast with Crimea which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014

The port is also used by Russia to export grain and oil across the Black Sea. The Ukrainian military claimed to have hit Port Kavkaz’s oil terminal in May with missiles. Reporting by Lucy Papachristou; Writing by Andrew Osborn, Gareth Jones and Gareth Jones.
