One dead and departures cancelled after roof collapses at Delhi Airport
Officials and media reported that a roof at New Delhi's main airport collapsed Friday under the weight of heavy rain and strong winds. One person was killed and authorities had to cancel flights in one terminal.
The airport released a statement on social media website X stating that a portion of the canopy in the departures area at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 a.m.
The statement read: "There have been injuries reported, and emergency personnel is working to provide all the necessary assistance and medical care to those affected."
Three people were reported injured, and one person trapped under the collapsed ceiling.
The statement stated that all departures by low-cost carriers IndiGo or SpiceJet from the terminal were cancelled up until 2 pm (0830 GMT).
Media images showed water pouring out of the collapsed roof, and a taxi trapped under a pillar. Rain continued to fall in the area leading to inundated streets and traffic jams.
India's Aviation Minister said that he was closely monitoring the situation, and that first responders are working on the site.
