On a visit to Sweden, the Polish PM will urge "navy police" in Baltic Sea

Posted to Maritime Reporter on November 27, 2024

On Wednesday, the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that during his two-day visit to Sweden he will urge Baltic and Nordic nations to take joint actions regarding the security of Baltic Sea water.

NATO is taking action in response to an escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This includes a joint control of the airspace above the Baltic states within the framework for "air policing."

Tusk stated, "I will convince my partners that an analogous formula is needed to control and secure the Baltic Sea, to create 'navy police', which would be a joint undertaking between the countries on the Baltic Sea who have the same feeling of threat from Russia."

Tusk is scheduled to meet with Swedish Premier Ulf Kristersson on Wednesday and/or Thursday. He will also take part in the meeting of prime ministers from the Baltic and Nordic nations.

The discussions will include transatlantic relations, regional security cooperation and a shared policy on the war in Ukraine. (Reporting and editing by Bernadettebaum)
