Olympics-Sailing-Slovenian kiteboarder penalised before Friday's final

Posted to Maritime Reporter on August 9, 2024

Toni Vodisek, a Slovenian kiteboarder, was penalised for failing to inspect his kit before going out onto the water. This means that if Toni wins the next race in the Olympic final then it won't count. The winner will be the person who finishes second.

Vodisek (24), who has two victories in the final of the first-to-3, heads Singapore's Max Maeder (17), and Austria's Valentin Bontus (23) who each have one victory in the medal series.

Riccardo pianosi, 19 years old and from Italy, has yet to win any races.

The lack of wind forced race officials to postpone the final race of the Olympic sailing event in the Mediterranean, off Marseille.

The sailing venue was mostly empty as the organisers started to take down the Olympic setup after the racing continued into the reserve day on Friday. However, loud groups of supporters were out on the beach cheering for the four finalist.

On the day of the national holiday, Edwin Tong, Singapore’s Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, joined Maeder’s family and his friends on the beach.

"We are proud of him." Tong said that he was "extremely grateful" and "proud" of the fact that someone from such a small country could reach this level of competition. He added that the final coincided with Singapore's National Day, which was a real bonus.

Tong said, "I believe what he has accomplished so far in his journey is already incredible. We are proud of him no matter what happens today."

The minister, wearing a red T-shirt, hugged Maeder who was dressed in a black neoprene suit, his trademark red helmet, and protective ski goggles. (Reporting and editing by Ken Ferris; Alexander Smith)
