Oil spill at Antwerp port causes docks and locks to be closed

Posted to Maritime Reporter on June 10, 2024

A port spokesperson announced on Friday that authorities in Antwerp had closed a dock, and were using drones to monitor any fallout of an oil spill which occurred when a ship bunkered at one of the docks.

The spokesperson stated, "We will do everything possible to ensure that the oil remains in the local area."

To prevent the spread of the spill, Belgium's largest port closed Deurganck Dock and the Kieldrecht Lock, the world's largest lock when measured by water volume.

Port spokesperson stated that 20 ships, the dock walls, and the water needed to be cleaned of oil before they were allowed to leave. She was unable to specify how much oil spilled into the water or the type of vessel that lost it.
