Nine one-horned Rhinos are killed by floods in India’s Assam
Authorities said that more than 150 animals drowned, including nine rare rhinoceros with one horn, in the floods in India's Assam state, located in northeastern India.
Assam has been hit by flash floods caused by heavy rainfall over the last two months. The flooding has caused thousands of people to be displaced and inundated residential areas, farms, and other places. According to the Assam Disaster Management Authority, seven deaths have occurred since Tuesday.
Kaziranga, which has almost one-third its camps inundated, is home to around half the world's population of one-horned Rhinos, which totals 4,000.
India's Weather Department said that the heavy rains expected in the north and northeastern regions of the country will continue for 2-3 days. This could worsen the current situation.
According to an assessment report by the state government, water levels in nine rivers in Assam have already reached dangerous levels. The tributaries to the Brahmaputra are also expected to continue rising until Wednesday.
As water from Nepal flows downhill, multiple rivers in India's eastern Bihar state are also on the verge of breaching their banks. Parts of Nepal were also flooded this week.
