New Zealand leads SailGP Los Angeles on the first day
Peter Burling, the skipper of New Zealand's SailGP team, took two victories out of four races in the sunny and breezy conditions of Los Angeles Harbour on Saturday.
New Zealand, which won the first race in Dubai, took the top spot on the final day with 31 points. Canada was second on 28 and three-time champions Australia came in third.
Burling said, "It feels good to be at the top." It's nice how much warmer the weather is today than it was yesterday. He added that yesterday was very cold.
New Zealand finished ninth in the third race, after being penalised by the organisers for an early start. Brazil's Martine Grael led early on before Australia's late surge secured victory.
Australia, led Tom Slingsby in a comeback, finished the day with 10-3-1-3, narrowing the gap between Canada and Australia to only one point.
France, which finished in sixth place in Sydney after missing the first two races due to boat issues, won the final race to finish in fourth.
"Our start was not ideal... we wanted to be dynamic." Quentin Delapierre, the French skipper, said that after a lot work to improve overtaking abilities we finished the day on a good place.
The defending champions Spain are now in fifth place. They are just one point behind Britain. And the American team is seventh, hoping to finish on a podium at home after finishing last in Sydney.
The performance of Denmark was ruined by a collision between their catamaran and a race marker during the first race. This caused damage which ruled them out for the remainder of the racing that day and took away 12 event points as well as eight points from their season's total.
