Mitsubishi Heavy executive: timing is not right to make a decision on passenger aircraft market
After the SpaceJet's failure, a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries executive stated that now is not the right time to decide if the company will reenter the market for commercial aircrafts, despite the commitment of the Japanese government to make-in-Japan planes.
Hiroyuki KOGUCHI, Senior Vice President in Charge of Commercial Aviation, stated that the Japanese engineering conglomerate would use the technology and human resources developed for the SpaceJet program in other aerospace and environment businesses.
Mitsubishi Heavy terminated last year the SpaceJet regional aircraft project due to delays in delivery, a result of which was difficulties obtaining certifications.
The Japanese industry ministry announced this year that it will continue a public-private 4 trillion yen project ($24.9 billion), to develop a next generation passenger aircraft, after 2035.
Koguchi said that Mitsubishi Heavy wanted to discuss concrete steps with the government on the future of aviation. "We're not yet in a position to decide whether or not to restart the aircraft assembly business," he told an annual shareholders meeting. ($1 = 160,4600 yen). (Reporting and editing by Gerry Doyle.)
