Minister blames Kosovo for the death of a Serbian policeman

Posted to Maritime Reporter on July 23, 2024

The government blamed Kosovo for the "terrorism" that led to the death of a Serbian policeman and the injury of another during a routine check on vehicles near the Bosnian Border.

Kosovo says the incident shouldn't be politicized

Serbia refuses to recognize the independence of its former Province.

According to a statement by Serbian interior minister Ivica Daci, police stopped a car with two people inside, and one of them got out, shot an officer in the chest and shoulder before fleeing.

The statement stated that one policeman died, while the other was stable in the hospital. Investigators also found a Kosovo passport bearing the name Artan Hajrizi and a German ID card at the scene.

"He killed a cop, he committed this clear act of terrorism which originated from Kosovo and Albanian structures. This is not a coincidence", Dacic told journalists.

Kosovo is a majority Albanian nation.

Dacic said later Thursday that Bosnian authorities arrested in Bijeljina a man only identified as Z.R. Hajrizi was suspected of organizing his trip from Presevo, a southern Serbian city, to Loznica.

In a short interview with Pristina’s Insajderi News Portal, a German man identified as Artan Hajrizi said that his brother Faton Hajrizi stole his documents. Kosovo media reported that Faton Hajrizi escaped from a prison in Kosovo at the beginning of this month.

Albin Kurti, Kosovo's Premier Minister, told reporters that the issue should not be politicized but rather treated from a professional and legal perspective, as well.

The Kosovo Foreign Ministry warned its citizens to be cautious in Serbia and avoid the shooting area. Police used drones and helicopters to track down the suspect.

The driver of the vehicle, or possibly another passenger, was arrested on the spot. (Reporting and editing by Andrew Cawthorne, Christina Fincher and Fatos bytyci)
