Malaysia Coast Guard locates oil tanker involved with collision off Singapore

Posted to Maritime Reporter on July 23, 2024

Malaysia's Coast Guard said Sunday that it had intercepted and located a large tanker involved in an exploding collision with another vessel just two days earlier off Singapore.

The Coast Guard said that on Saturday, the tanker Ceres I flying the flag of Sao Tome & Principe had left the site where the collision occurred that resulted in a fire that injured two crew members. The coast guard also said that the ship's tracking system was believed to have been turned off.

In a Sunday statement, the Coast Guard said that two tugboats were towing Ceres I in Malaysian waters.

It added that the Coast Guard had detained the Ceres I, the two tugboats and will be conducting further investigations.

The coast guard stated in a statement released on Sunday that it had conducted aerial surveys and found minor oil spillage at the site of the collision of the Ceres I with the Hafnia Nile flying the Singapore flag.

The statement read: "The Environment Department has been notified and will be conducting further monitoring."
