Italia recovers 14 additional bodies following migrant shipwreck

Posted to Maritime Reporter on June 21, 2024

The Italian coast guard recovered another 14 bodies from the wreckage of a ship carrying migrants off the southern Calabria area on Friday. At least 34 people were killed, according to a press release.

Charity agencies reported that the shipwreck occurred about 200 km (125 mi) east of Calabria at the tip Italy's boot. A boat, which had probably left Turkey, caught fire and flipped, they said.

The coast guard ships Dattilo, and Corsi recovered 14 bodies today. The coastguard said that 34 bodies had been recovered since the search began.

The agencies reported that the coastguard had rescued eleven people and brought the body of one woman ashore, but they warned that over 60 people were still missing. This means more could still be at sea.

U.N. data shows that more than 23,500 migrants are missing or dead in central Mediterranean waters.

The Coast Guard said that aircraft from Italy and Frontex, the European Union border agency, were helping with the search. (Reporting and editing by Angelo Amante)
