India Cabinet approves funding for offshore wind energy programme worth $894 million
The government announced on Wednesday that the Indian cabinet had approved a funding program for offshore wind projects with a cost of $893.60 million.
India, the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, wants to increase the use of cleaner fuels to reduce its carbon emissions. It has also set a goal of net zero emissions by 2070.
The program aims to make sure that projects are attractive and viable for private investors. The programme includes funding to install and commission two offshore wind projects, each of 500 megawatts, off the coasts of Gujarat in the west and Tamil Nadu in the south.
The statement stated that "this scheme will not only kick-start the offshore wind development in India, but also lead the creation of the required ecosystem in India to complement its ocean-based economic activities."
Statement added that the combined 1 GW offshore projects in Gujarat will generate renewable electricity of approximately 3.72 billion units per year. $ 1 = 83.3930 Indian Rupees (Reporting and editing by Sharon Singleton in New Delhi)
