How Iran is moving sanctioned oil around in the world.

Posted to Maritime Reporter on January 7, 2025

Published a special report based on leaked emails last year that showed how Iranian oil company Sahara Thunder moved around the globe.

The story shows the journeys of tankers carrying Iranian crude oil and the methods they use to avoid detection. They can forge documents, change their names, or hide their location, all while smuggling the oil into China.

The trove of more than 10,000 emails also helped map the locations of the oil tankers that Sahara Thunder used and those of its partners, from Bandar Abbas, Iran, and Fujaraih, United Arab Emirates to Venezuela, Murmansk, northern Russia, and the Strait of Malacca, as well as a number of ports in China.
