Glover is Britain's hope to restore rowing's reputation at the Olympics

Posted to Maritime Reporter on July 10, 2024

The rowing competitions at the Paris Games will see Britain trying to get back on top after a disappointing performance in Tokyo ended their recent reign of Olympic dominance.

The British rowers won the gold medal in 2008, 2012, and 2016, but did not win a medal at the Tokyo Games due to the pandemic. They will look to Helen Glover's vast experience to help them get back on track in Paris.

Glover, a two-time Olympic champion, is expected to join forces with Esme Booth and Rebecca Shortern for a gold medal in the women's quartet in Paris.

Andrew Randall, the coach of the team that won the European Championships in recent weeks, said: "We have been working on this combination for the past two years."

I think we have found the perfect combination of power, technique and fit. This summer, it's going be very hard to beat the four.

However, the British will not be able to do everything on their own.

The Netherlands set a precedent by winning the World Rowing Cup 2024 overall title, with Italy and Germany coming in third and fourth.

New Zealand, Australia and the United States will all send strong teams. New Zealand won three gold medals in Tokyo and Australia two.

Jody Verdonkschot, U.S. rowing's Jody said about the American team that "there is such a rich tradition and culture. There is so much talent and knowledge." We can dream big and work hard to achieve them. "This is what rowing is all about, at any level."

The 2024 Olympic program includes 14 events, seven for women and 7 for men in the same boat class. Each race is held over 2,000 meters.

The sport has not changed since 1896, when the first Games were cancelled because of bad weather. Women's events were introduced to the Montreal Olympics in 1975.

The two disciplines that will be competing at the Vaires sur Marne Nautical Stadion east of Paris are sculls and sweep rowing. Sculls is where athletes use two oars while sweep rowing uses a single paddle.

Romania will send the largest contingent to Paris, consisting of 45 athletes and 12 boats. Britain and United States will each be sending 42.

The Olympic competition begins on July 27. It runs through August 3, with an extra day reserved for Aug. 4, in case of bad weather. (Reporting and editing by Ken Ferris; Philip O'Connor)
