German warship serving UNIFIL has downed a drone off Lebanon, the ministry reports
Unmanned flying objects were brought down by a German warship that was part of UNIFIL's peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, according to a German Defence Ministry spokesperson.
The spokesperson reported that the corvette had brought an unidentified unmanned aircraft into the water through a controlled accident. There were no injuries to the German vessel and its crew.
He added that the corvette Ludwigshafen am Rhein continues to perform its duties.
The first news report on this incident was published by the dpa News Agency.
Since Israel began a ground campaign against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon on October 1, UNIFIL's positions in Lebanon have been under fire. According to the U.N., five peacekeepers were injured.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has asked that U.N. withdraw its troops.
Calling allegations
It is "completely false" that Israel has planned to target peacekeepers.
Recent incidents have caused widespread alarm among European countries participating in the mission.
"We urge everyone to not obstruct UNIFIL's implementation of its mandate. The German government, European Union and the United Nations all share this opinion. A spokesperson for the foreign ministry told reporters Wednesday that it was a unanimous view. (Reporting and editing by Kirsti Knolle, Toby Chopra and Rachel More)
