Fire at Tiplam terminal, Brazil's Santos Port, suspends sugar loading

Posted to Maritime Reporter on June 21, 2024

According to a company note, a fire at the Tiplam Terminal in Santos' largest port destroyed a conveyor and electrical systems. This caused the suspension of sugar loading from piers 2 & 3 of that terminal.

The fire started on site on Thursday evening and was put out by Friday morning. The note from VLI, which manages the terminal, stated that there were no casualties, but that the destruction of a conveyor belt had stopped loading in the berths. The note was read by.

The company also suspended the unloading trains that arrived at the port via rail, bringing sugar and other goods.

In the letter to clients, the company did not provide an estimated time for the terminal's resumption of operations. VLI's press representatives are expected to respond to a comment request later on Friday.

According to data provided by shipping agency Williams on the expected loading of 800,000 metric tonnes of sugar, Tiplam is expected to fill 13 vessels in the next two weeks. The majority of these vessels would be bound for China. Wilmar was the most active shipper at this terminal. (Reporting and editing by Matthew Lewis in New York)
