Finland Coast Guard secures oil tanker following engine failure
The Finnish Coast Guard said Monday that it would deploy one of its patrol boats and a towboat to help an oil tanker in the Gulf of Finland after its engine failed. It was trying to avoid environmental damage.
The coast guard reported that the 183-metre-long (600-foot-long) M/T Jazz, a tanker flying the Panamanian flag, had drifted south of Finland's Hanko Peninsula for some time before it anchored in the area.
The coast guard stated that the incident did not appear to be connected to recent damage caused to underwater power and telecoms cable in the area. Also, seabed infrastructure wasn't at risk when the vessel anchored.
The Coast Guard said that the Jazz was on its way to Primorsk, a Russian port. It did not have any oil at the time. (Reporting and editing by Terje Solsvik, Essi Lehto)
