Clapcich's solo mission: Vendee bid to sail history
Francesca Clapcich, an Italian skipper, has announced a campaign to compete at the Vendee Globe in 2028. This would make her one of the few people who could compete in all four of the sport's most prestigious events.
Clapcich, backed by 11th Hour Racing and The Ocean Race, aims to complete a career "grand-slam". She already has an impressive resume that includes the Olympics.
Clapcich, in Yachting World magazine: "For my first attempt at the Vendee Globe, I need a vessel that is fast and reliable."
We've selected Team Malizia as our Technical Partner because they know the boat and can set me up for an intensive immersion in this world of solo IMOCA off-shore sailing.
IMOCA racing, a form of offshore yachting that features high-tech monohull sailboats measuring 60 feet in length. These boats are often sailed alone or with a crew during challenging ocean races.
Clapcich, who will be taking over Boris Herrmann's IMOCA Jacques Vabre-Malizia after the Ocean Race Europe in August, will begin her qualification with October's Transat Cafe L'OR.
The 36-year old's sailing career spans several disciplines. She represented Italy in both the Laser Radial and 49erfx in London 2012, and in Rio 2016 in the 49erfx. Next she will captain American Magic for the Women's America's Cup in 2024 and win The Ocean Race in 2023 with 11th Hour racing.
Charlie Dalin, a French sailor, won the Vendee Globe 2024-2025, after completing the non-stop race around the world in a time record of 64 days 19 hours 22 minutes and 49 seconds. Christian Radnedge edited this article.
