British take advantage of Italian error to lead America's Cup Challenger Series
Britain took advantage of an Italian mistake in the America's Cup Challenger Series on Monday to gain a 3-2 edge in the race to face New Zealand and win the "Auld Mug".
Race five of the series was a breeze-free affair, with the wind speed at Barcelona being below the maximum of 21 knots. Both crews were delighted by the calmer conditions than the day before.
The British took advantage of Italy's momentary mishap in foiling the AC75's rudder, and ripped across the line to establish an early lead. They had to defend this for the remainder of the race while Italy fought to catch up.
The British co-helms Ben Ainslie, Dylan Fletcher and Francesco Bruni tried to slow down Italy's Jimmy Spithill with their rig using 'dirty' air.
"They returned well" They pushed us hard. The guys did an excellent job of defending and keeping the boat upright," Ainslie said.
Ainslie stated on the America's Cup broadcast that "we take each race as they come.. we know we are up against an elite team."
Bruni stated that the Italians experienced a "little issue" with their foil and added that it didn't go their way from there in the first race of the two on Monday. (Reporting and editing by Ken Ferris; Alexander Smith)
