Britain wins second America's Cup against New Zealand

Posted to Maritime Reporter on October 16, 2024

Britain defeated New Zealand in a head-tohead America's Cup Final on Wednesday. The result reduced the holders' advantage to 4-2.

The British crew, led by Ben Ainslie, outmanoeuvred Peter Burling's New Zealand crew in the last moments of the crucial start and shot across to the line with their AC75 foiling boat in order to establish an early advantage in the second race.

The British were first around the mark, and stayed ahead for all eight legs. They reached speeds of over 35 knots while navigating a turbulent sea. At the finish they held off New Zealand's late challenge. (Reporting and editing by Andrew Cawthorne; Alexander Smith)
