Blake Horvath's defensive stop propel Navy over Oklahoma

Posted to Maritime Reporter on December 27, 2024

Blake Horvath rushed for 155 yard and two touchdowns, and Navy stopped Oklahoma’s two-point convertion in the final second to win 21-20 in the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth on Friday.

Jake Roberts caught a 10-yard pass from Michael Hawkins Jr. with just six seconds left.

Jake Reed sacked Hawkins after he failed to find an open receiver.

The Sooners almost recovered the onside-kick but were unable to haul it in.

Oklahoma won the total yardage battle (433-318), but failed to score on their eight previous drives.

Hawkins completed 28 of 43 passes for 247 yard and two touchdowns.

Navy's defense tightened after falling behind by two touchdowns in the early going, and the Midshipmen fought back.

Navy, which was down 14-7 in the third quarter and pinned within its own 5, was also unable to recover.

Horvath had nothing in front of himself but space on the second play.

Woodi Washington, an Oklahoma defensive back, chased Horvath down and tackled him at the goalline.

Horvath was initially ruled out of the endzone, but after a review the play was changed to give Horvath a 95-yard touchdown. This is the longest run ever in the history of the program.

The Midshipmen took their first lead after a 12-play, 65-yard drive in the fourth quarter that took more than seven full minutes. Horvath scored a 6-yard touchdown to end the drive.

Navy (10-3) is the only program in history to have 10 or more victories, while Oklahoma (6-7), for the second consecutive season, had a losing record.

Oklahoma scored touchdowns in each of its two first drives.

Gavin Sawchuk scored the first touchdown for the Sooners with a run of 21 yards.

Sawchuk had not run more than eight yards in this season before the match.

Hawkins' 56-yard touchdown pass to Zion Kearney on Oklahoma's third-and-7 drive gave the Sooners a 14-0 lead just nine minutes after the game began.

The Sooners offense then struggled and turned the ball over in both downs of back-to-back drives, despite moving the ball significantly during both drives.
